memories of the 1990's recession and unemployment

I am no longer "30something" I am in fact turning 42.. I am having very strong (and some more disturbing) memories at the moment about the 1990's recession because I recently lost my job due to the coronavirus. I am at the exact same age that my mother would have been when she lost her job in the early 1990's.  My family struggled then with putting food on the table, there were always arguments about finances, long qeues at centrelink, waits in the hot car while my mother attended her interviews, my brother and I couldn't go on school excusions sometimes because we had no money.  My mother lost a job that she really loved, and she was very depressed and spent most of the next 10 years of her life unemployed.  I am trying to be optimistic here, but this is the worse time ever to be looking for a job!  I have had a few interviews, but I am only really cut out for entry-level jobs, so i am finding myself competing with people half my age for the same jobs and there are so many people out of work.  To add to my mothers unemployment struggles, my partner has also spent most of his working life unemployed, he lost his last full time job during the global financial crisis (2009) and has struggled to find full-time work since, he has a job this week, but his contract will end next week so then we will both be on the dole.  Fortunately, we do not have kids, children have never really been an option for us (can't afford them!).  Its getting so hard to remain positive and I'm very worried about the future. Jobseeker will help us until the end of September, however beyond that is anyone's guess.  What if I never get another job?

@30something .

It really is a tough time for so many looking for work. I really am sorry you are reliving all this as an adult.

I really don’t know what to say about the future of employment, and the anxiety related to it.

September is not far off. I hoped Jobseeker allowances would be extended, but not looking like it will.

I’m no help, but wanted to let you know I’m hearing you.
